The Next President
Shaping America's Future Through The Courts
The winner of the 2024 election could appoint two Supreme Court justices, potentially locking in a conservative or liberal majority for the next 20 years. President Trump appointed three justices during his four-year term, turning the Supreme Court into a political tool for conservative policies. Case in point: reversing Roe v. Wade.
For half a century, Roe v. Wade was the law of the land, and, in every year since, it has been a target for conservative Christians and other groups. Justice Clarence Thomas has hinted that long-standing precedents could be challenged, posing a threat to human and civil rights’ progress. In 2022, a new precedent was set. In a 6-3 decision, conservatives achieved their goal, pushing the decision back to the states, paving the way for severe abortion laws nationwide.
Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Sonia Sotomayor are all in their early to mid-70s, with Chief Justice Roberts celebrating his 70th birthday soon. Supreme Court appointments are lifetime commitments, but advanced age, illness, retirement or death, means future appointments are a real possibility - with that decision wrested/vested with whomever the next President will be.
The Supreme Court’s future hangs in the balance - indeed, the future of America is at stake.
Historically, the Supreme Court used laws like the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to fight America’s original sin—slavery—and promote civil rights. Now, these provisions are being used to roll back these rights.
Recent rulings reflect this trend. The 11th Circuit Court's decision against the Fearless Fund, which issues grants that support Black women, followed the Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling that ended race-based college admissions. Both decisions disrupt access to education and economic opportunities for marginalized communities. We suspect this is a trend that will gain steam if not met with equal force.
Despite the former president’s manipulation of the courts to delay his trials, we are still a nation of laws. The next president has the power to reshape America through our supreme court system. Who will capture the hearts, minds and VOTES of Americans to steer the nation forward?
Voting in the next election is crucial.
